Sales data for the month of July has not been officially released by The NPD Group yet but it seems that Microsoft couldn’t wait to celebrate. The Xbox One was the best selling home console in the United States last month according to a tweet from Microsoft’s head of Xbox marketing, Aaron Greenberg.
Thanks to everyone who helped make #XboxOne the #1 selling console in July according to #NPD, nice to be back on top!

There is some room for debate, though. It seems that the Nintendo 3DS was actually the best selling video game system last month. It could be that Greenberg simply meant home consoles when he made the tweet.
Microsoft is understandably excited by the Xbox One’s strong position in the NPD rankings. The last time the Xbox One had outsold its rival, the PlayStation 4, was back in October of 2015. It is not surprising that Xbox One sold so well – the original model was being sold at heavy discounts in order to make room on retailer shelves for the smaller Xbox One S which launched this month.
The August NPD sales data is a toss-up. The Xbox One could potentially win another month because of the launch of the slimmer model. However, the PS4 will undoubtedly be bolstered by the recent release of No Man’s Sky.
