Obsidian Entertainment Not Opposed To Acquisition

When it comes to western RPGs, Obsidian Entertainment has long been one of the most respected game development studios. With titles such as South Park: The Stick of Truth, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas under its belt, the studio would be an excellent asset for a publisher interested in expanding its portfolio of RPGs.

It turns out the people at Obsidian Entertainment agree. Apparently a lot of publishers do too as the studio has already received numerous offers for acquisition.

This is a time when we see former AAA game developers leave their employers and open independent studios so why would Obsidian Entertainment buck that trend?

CEO Feargus Urquheart offers his perspective from running an independent studio. “We sign a contract and we must hit that number and it is the end of the earth if we [don’t]. We’ve had to sign away royalties, we’ve had to sign away ownership of IPs… whereas internal studios, it’s just another month – they’re already paying the people, it’s already in the budget these people are going to be paid,” he said.

So why hasn’t Obsidian Entertainment accepted an acquisition offer yet? “We just didn’t think the offers were commensurate to what we’re worth and then what we would get to do,” Urquheart revealed.

Who do you think would be a good fit for Obsidian Entertainment?
