A Story of Boy Meets Girl
Fooley Cooley has been approved for two new seasons by Toonami. Toonami has made great strides since its return to Cartoon Network and has grabbed a hold of anime hits like Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter, and Kill La Kill. Even before the return of the programming block, they have always been a gateway for western audiences to enjoy some anime goodness. In fact, Fooley Cooley or FLCL for short, aired on Toonami back in its heyday. Seeing the new partnership with Cartoon Network is not much of a surprise with their past history.
For those who don’t know what FLCL is, there really isn’t an easy way to explain the plot of the show. Essentially, most fans of the series would call it a coming of age story of a young man and his experiences with girls but it’s not as simple as that. There are mechs, magical guitars, flying scooters, innuendos, space pirates, and, best of all a soundtrack, that holds all of the insanity together. Yeah, it’s an experience one has to under go to understand. It’s hectic but graceful, inappropriate yet alluring, sad yet enlightening. Fooley Cooley was a wild ride that fans never forgot and that showed when thunderous applause took place during the announcement that the Pillows, the band that made up the soundtrack of the original season, is to return.
In an interview with Polygon, the following information was revealed on the new season:
In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
With fans waiting in anticipation for the next season, it may be time for a refresh of where we left the story of Fooley Cooley. Luckily for fans, the entire first season is available to watch on Funimation’s YouTube channel.
