The lead programmer of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on the Sega Genesis has recently taken a position with Square Enix. The esteemed developer joined the massive publisher earlier this month according to a recent tweet from Yuji Naka himself:
Just a quick note to let you know, I joined SQUARE ENIX in January.
I’m joining game development as before, and strive to develop games at SQUARE ENIX.
I aim to develop an enjoyable game, please look forward to it.— Yuji Naka / 中 裕司 (@nakayuji) January 22, 2018
Naka had left Sega in 2006 to form Prope Ltd, an independent studio established with partial funding from his former employer. Most of the titles created by Prope were for mobile platforms though two notable titles were developed for the 3DS StreetPass feature – StreetPass Mansion and StreetPass Fishing.
“I aim to develop an enjoyable game, please look forward to it,” Naka wrote.
It is difficult to guess what franchise from Square Enix he might be working on. Most of their games released over the last few years seem a strange match for Naka’s vision. My guess is he is hard at work on a new IP though only time can tell.
