Fallout 76 has been at the forefront of the internet hate machine since the launched. Bethesda has been doing damage control left and right and nobody seems to really have anything positive to say about the game. If they do, their praise is so drowned out by the current hate hype and nobody pays attention to the positive comments.
The most vocal of these negative voices are PC players. Claiming that the game is more or less unplayable in its current state and have been denied refunds for the game. That isn’t entirely true because there have been people getting refunds for the game. On Monday morning The law firm of Migliaccio & Rathod LLP took to Reddit wanting to specifically talk to the people who had bought the game and had been refused a refund.
The reason behind the lawsuit is cited on their website as:”Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating Bethesda Game Studios for releasing a heavily-glitched game – Fallout 76 – and refusing to issue refunds for PC purchasers of the game who found it to be unplayable because of its technical problems. While minor bugs and glitches are expected with the release of most new games, Fallout 76 launched with a 56GB patch that has proven to be but a starting point for the game’s problems. Gamers who have tried to receive a refund because of the game’s myriad glitches have been unable to do so since they downloaded the game, leaving them to deal with an unplayable experience until patches bring it back to a playable state.”
How this law firm originally caught on to this issue is unclear. Maybe one of their own is a PC gamer? Or someone in the DC area contacted them and brought it to their attention? All we know is that the hate machine is very real for Fallout 76 and even for Bethesda at the moment with no sign of stopping any time soon.
My personal two cents on this is that Bethesda gave everyone ample time with a BETA test, to show us what the game was all about. If you didn’t pre-order(which could be obtained for as little as $5 down, and no matter what you spent to obtain the BETA code, could be refunded if you didn’t like the experience) the game to get into the B.E.T.A and bought it right out of the gate without doing any research on your own, this seems to be the consumers fault.
I also think that the game has attracted a different type of player than the Fallout series usually sees because it was marketed as a MMO/FPS. I think a lot of new people flocked to it expecting a world full of other players with raids, dungeon diving and lots of run n’ gun action which is not the case at all in *any* Fallout game. For those of us that are Fallout fans, even some of us have joined the hate machine because of supposed lore gaps, specifically with the Brotherhood of Steel story line in the game. If you play the story line out and listen to the holotapes, they fully explain how and why there is a sect of the Brotherhood of Steel (I won’t spoil it). There also seems to be a section of people who haven’t touched a Fallout game since Fallout 3 launched and for some reason have become experts on what a Fallout game should be while probably just jumping on this hate hype machine for Fallout 76 to get views and likes on their pages and streams.
Fallout 76 is an ambitious project outside of the scope they are comfortable with working on with a Fallout game. While it is true that experience with the Elder Scrolls MMO that could carry over, Fallout is a totally different experience. Bethesda just needs more time to work things out. Fallout 76 hasn’t even been out for a full month yet and I don’t recall any game with this scope – especially an MMO – to have launched without a teething period. While I play on Xbox One, the only issues I’ve run in to are occasional crashing and a spawn glitch that will have 10 or so enemies just spawn out of a single beingy. To each their own though. I commend Bethesda for actually stepping out of their comfort zone and trying to hand us something different, yet oddly the same, with the Fallout franchise.
