This weekend only one movie was released in a large number of theaters. DC’s Birds of Prey opened with a dismal $33 million domestically. This is way under the estimated $50 million the studios thought the movie would bring in. The weekend was so slow that Jumani: The Next Level jumped back into 5th with $5.5 million.
Birds of Prey is getting rave reviews from critics and fans, it’s just that not that many people went to see the movie. The movie will do great when it comes to a home release, it’s just not the right time for people to go out and watch a movie. Currently, the movie is sitting at $81 million worldwide, it should finish off around $200 million when this is all over. Bad Boys for Life added $12 million to end this weekend with a worldwide total of $336 million. Dolittle is making more money in the international market. It might not be much more, it’s at $63 million domestically and $94.7 million internationally. That brings it to a total of $158.6 million worldwide.
Weekend Top Three
3. 1917 $9 million
2. Bad Boys for Life $12 million
1. Birds of Prey $33. million
Next weekend three movies will be released in a large number of theaters. The Photograph, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the horror film Fantasy Island. Right now I think Birds of Prey has a great chance of staying on top of the box office for two weekends. Fantasy Island might be its only competition right now. Video game movies tend to be awful and with the delay that Sonic the Hedgehog had, it may not have helped it.
Tonight is the Oscars on ABC, will you be watching as Joker has the chance to take most of the categories? Will Parasite win big? Let me know how you feel in the comment section below.
