The man who laughs fought a fierce battle over the weekend and was rewarded for it as Joker returned to the top of the box office charts while Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil fell to second place. Joker is estimated to have brought in just under $19 million over the weekend and is now approaching about $850 million in ticket sales worldwide. The movie is now the fifth biggest DC Comics adaptation (going by total ticket sales) and has pushed 2016’s Wonder Woman down to sixth place.
Don’t feel too badly for the House of Mouse, though. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil came in a very close second place with an estimated $18.5 million domestic take over the weekend. Worldwide box office should be very close to $300 million by the time you read this.
The Addams Family just finished its third week on the big screen and is estimated to have brought in $11.7 million domestically and should be sitting somewhere around $84 million worldwide. With a budget thought to be roughly $40 million USD, the film has some work to do on the road to becoming profitable. I have not yet seen this one myself. I am not a fan of the art style.
Zombieland: Double Tap brought it about $11.6 million in domestic ticket sales which brings the worldwide total to a bit under $64 million. There was only a difference of about $100,000 between third and fourth place at the box office this weekend which just goes to show why your choices at the movie theater are important. A horror flick also rounds out the Top 5 this week with Countdown launching with $9 million in ticket sales this weekend. Interestingly enough, the movie seems to be equally popular among men and women – polled audience members were split nearly down the middle when it came to gender.

Terminator: Dark Fate blasts its way on to 3,500 screens this week and will probably lead the box office charts. David told me he plans to review it and take it from me – he is going to have a lot to say. Arctic Dogs will also make its premiere on 3,600 screens so expect strong performance from that movie as well.
