FromSoftware has released a new Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice story preview trailer. In it, we see a battle raging in Japan, as well as the circumstances that led a warrior known as the Owl to take in a young boy he calls Wolf.

In the aftermath of a gruesome battle, the Owl finds a new apprentice.
The game’s director Miyazaki has previously talked about how Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will have “things beyond human.” Even with that in mind, it seems that FromSoftware is telling a story in a fictionalized, mythologized version of Japan, a version that still references historical periods and events.
This lines up with what Miyazaki said about the world, stating ““Of course it’s important to retain a sense of faithfulness, but we’re not trying to make a historical depiction of the Sengoku era. While we explored more drastically fantastical elements in our previous games, we want to approach this with a little more dignity this time – a little more carefully maybe.”
