Review: What Remains of Edith Finch for PS4

What Remains of Edith Finch is an exploration game by Giant Sparrow who also developed The Unfinished Swan.

What Remains of Edith Finch shows you how the house of Finches has been abandoned for a very long time
Left to gather dust

Story:

What Remains of Edith Finch is a story of Edith. After her mother passes away she inherits the family home where Edith grew up. Once you go back to the home you explore and learn more about the Finch family.

The Finch family is one that’s followed by tragedy, as all of the family members meet an early death. You learn about the Finch family and how most of the Finches met their fate through mementos scattered around the house. Most of the stories are incredibly upsetting, due to how most of the members of the family die before they even hit adulthood.

The story is an emotional roller coaster which will keep you interested until the end credits start rolling.

Graphics:

The graphics are really well done. The entire Finch house is full of small details and just taking the time and walking around the house is a lot of fun. Each Finch has a highly detailed room, with small details which help you understand their personalities.

Also when you explore the mementos most of them have different styles. One of the most memorable mementos in the game is a cel shaded comic book segment, another a dungeon crawler and a bunch other styles as well.

What Remains of Edith Finch has a bunch of great segments, each better than the last

Audio:

The audio is really well done. First of all I wanted to address the amazing musical score. It’s hauntingly beautiful and it helps build atmosphere. In one of my favorite segments which is the before mentioned comic book sequence they use the Halloween theme, which makes that memento more memorable then others. The voice acting is also really well done. You mostly hear Edith, but you do hear the other Finches from time to time. The actors all do a great job in portraying the Finches, with tons of emotion in their voices.

Gameplay:

What Remains of Edith Finch is a walking simulator at heart, but it does a lot more than other walking simulators out there. Most of the mementos have a different play styles, which for some would break up the tedium of just walking around. For example in one memento you play as all different types of animals and all control differently, in another you take photographs of the environment to progress the story around you.  It’s all a lot of fun and it keeps you intrigued to see how the next memento plays.

Verdict:

With framerate issues the PS4 version in some segments and some blurry textures, I still can highly recommend What Remains of Edith Finch to anyone who wants a good story driven game. Even though it’s short, you will have a great time playing through the game.
