New X-Men: Apocalypse Photo Shows Angel In Action

The ever social media prolific Bryan Singer has posted a new photo of X-Man Angel to his Instagram. As we saw from the trailer a few months ago, Angel will fight Nightcrawler in a human orchestrated death match. It doesn’t take much to guess that this is where Angel may lose his wings and take the first step to becoming Archangel.

You may recognise the man on the floor as Blob, the famous mutant supervillain, who is know for his large body mass and super strength. He appeared in the unsuccessful 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine played by Kevin Durand. In the comics Archangel is created by Apocalypse after Angel gruesomely loses his wings in one of Marvel’s most iconic scenes. What made Angel’s mutilation so sad for fans at the time, Was that it was a graphic example of mutant on mutant violence rather than just human on mutant violence, which in the X-Men storylines is common.

In the film, which comes to theatres May 27th, Archangel will serve as one of Apocalypse’s horsemen with the other three being Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp). The new film will be set in the 1990s and features younger incarnations of original X-Men Jean Gray (Sophie Turner), Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), Jubilation Lee (Lana Condor) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) as well as younger versions of other fan favourite mutants Havok (Lucas Till) and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) .

What do you think of Angel? Do you prefer him as Archangel and (because I always ask!) who’s your favourite mutant from film or in the comics? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter @TiCGN or @alicecsrmoss!

“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”
