After months of rumors, Nintendo has finally announced when their next console will be coming out at their quarterly financial statement. “For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed ‘NX’ with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally.”

This is surprising news in multiple ways. For one, everyone thought the console would launch in the holiday season (either of 2016 or 2017) as a console has not launched outside of the holidays in some time. It also surprising that Nintendo is using the NX name; the name has been attached to rumors for sometime and it appears those rumors are true. While Nintendo claims the NX name to be a code name, they could easily use it as the console’s official name.
The NX will also not be shown at this year’s E3, with Nintendo focusing on the next iteration of The Legend of Zelda at E3 instead. While this may seem like odd news, Nintendo will probably decide to do a special Nintendo Direct focused on the new console at a time where they’re not competing for news.
