Titanfall 3 Is Not Currently Being Developed

Earlier today, Respawn Entertainment officially unveiled their free-to-play, battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe: Apex Legends. This game is certainly a departure from the two prior games, with the titular Titans themselves not being a part of the game. Some of the developers at Respawn spoke with Eurogamer about Apex Legends, as well as what’s going on with the Titanfall franchise. They were concise and blunt about several points, including major bit of news: Titanfall 3 is not currently being developed.

Drew McCoy, Lead Producer for Apex Legends, told Eurogamer that “There are some people who think there are too many battle royale games or it’s a fad, the world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not – this is what we’re making.”

He continued on by explaining why there hasn’t been any marketing before the game’s launch, saying “To try and convince a skeptical audience for months with trailers and hands-on articles, we’re just like ‘let the game speak for itself’ – it’s the most powerful antidote to potential problems. We’re doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it’s not Titanfall 3. It’s the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that – let’s just ship the game and let players play.”

Respawn did have some good news for anyone who wants to play Apex Legends with their friends across platforms. While the game won’t support crossplay at launch, they are planning on adding it sometime after launch. Cross-progression will never be possible however, due to the nature of how the game’s base systems were put together.

While it’s disappointing for fans that Titanfall 3 is not currently in development, Respawn Entertainment is being very honest about the nature of what they are working on right now. For more information, I recommend reading Respawn’s interview with Eurogamer.
