Make it so: Patrick Stewart to reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard in new Star Trek series

CBS is heavily investing in new Star Trek content – possibly as many as four new shows set in the universe originally developed by Gene Roddenberry. While we do not know too many details about all of these new shows, we did get an exciting announcement about a major character from the franchise putting on his Starfleet uniform again and presumably continuing the search for new life and new civilizations. The announcement comes from none other than Sir Patrick Stewart who of course played the legendary Captain Jean-Luc Picard for over 15 years. You can watch the announcement from the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention below:

Stewart followed up the announcement with a post on Twitter which you can see below:

CBS is hungry for more new content the network can use to expand the offerings on its CBS All Access streaming app and new Star Trek series are about as surefire a bet for long term revenue they can hope for. The new series that features Picard will not be a remake of The Next Generation but rather an entirely new show that takes place later in Jean-Luc’s lifetime.

“I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course,” wrote Stewart. “It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.”
