Grand Theft Auto V Ships 54 Million Copies

Take 2 recently released their quarterly financial reports. In this report they announced that the company managed to ship 54 Million units of the extremely popular Grand Theft Auto 5, up from 52 Million units in the previous quarter. Grand Theft Auto was launched first on Xbox 360 and PS3, then later launched on the Xbox One. It hit PC earlier this year to much fanfare.

Grand Theft Auto 5 shipping 2 Million units in 3 months destroys all other franchises that shipped games during this generation. In comparison, The Witcher 3 shipped 4 Million units, and Halo Master Chief Collection shipped 5 Million. This is an impressive feat for any company, and is certain to solidify the franchise as the number one in gaming. The game should reach 100 Million units by the end of this generation. A breakdown between platforms is not available, but it’s expected that the majority of those sales are on next generation hardware like the Xbox One and PS4.

In a time when game developers are complaining about paltry sales, it’s good to see that one is making a killing. It proves that if the developer spends time optimizing the game for each system, they should reap the benefits.
