In First Reformed, Ethan Hawke stars as a chaplain grieving the death of his son, who is tasked with counselling Amanda Seyfried’s pregnant Mary and her environmentalist husband. If that doesn’t sound like an exhilarating description just know that First Reformed is a Paul Schrader film. The writer behind Taxi Driver and Raging Bull knows something about violence, and First Reformed appears to be a thriller that is more than meets the eye. Check out the trailer below:
Paul Schrader is touching on well-covered ground here, not least by himself over his forty year career. However early reviews, coming in from Venice Film Festival and beyond, hint that this crisis-of-faith yarn is Schrader’s best work in years. His most recent work, Dog Eat Dog was a guilty pleasure for many but didn’t linger long in the mind. Critics were less than kind too. In First Reformed though he has teamed up with Ethan Hawke, an actor with a wealth of experience and a great adaptability. He can do sombre and he can do fierce, typical and perfect for a Schrader movie.
In the last few years A24 has developed quite the reputation as the company to watch in the entertainment business. They were only founded in late 2012 but have already had countless hits, from Amy to Moonlight, from Room to Ladybird. First Reformed comes with that same A24 tag which only increases the hype surrounding the film. They back inventive and exciting work, and given their impressive back catalogue, they are very selective.
First Reformed is directed by Paul Schrader and stars Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried. It will be released in the US on May 18th. Release dates in other countries are yet to be set.
