Somehow, this was just another slow Summer weekend at the movies. This is the second weekend in a row that Dunkirk has taken the top spot at the box office. Atomic Blonde opened in the top ten despite some expectation that it could have been one of the top three movies this weekend. People wanted to see The Emoji Movie for some reason, as it came in at number two.
Dunkirk topped the weekend with $28 million while The Emoji Movie grossed $25 million in it’s opening weekend. The movie is sitting at an 8% rating at Rotten Tomatoes at this moment. The action movie Atomic Blonde opened up at number four on the top ten. This movie features Charlize Theron as spy for M16. She has to form an alliance with James McAvoy’s character on the eve of the Berlin Wall falling down as they look to discover the murder of other undercover spies.
Weekend Top Five
- Dunkirk: $28 million
- The Emoji Movie: $25 million
- Girls Trip: $20 million
- Atomic Blonde: $18.5 million
- Spider-Man Homecoming: $13 million
It seems that the Summer movie season is starting to get a little stale. With movies not reaching studio’s expectations, it may be time to get ready for what it is coming in the fall and winter. Some of the upcoming movies for the rest of the year include The Dark Tower, Kidnap, Detroit, Annabelle: Creation, The Glass Castle, and the second Nut Job movie.
