We are only a few months away from the premiere of an all new Star Trek series and CBS just released a trailer during their panel at San Diego Comic Con that gives us our most in-depth look at the show so far. Not only that but there are a couple of familiar faces who appear in surprising cameos. Before we get into spoiler territory, have a look at the Star Trek: Picard SDCC trailer for yourself below:

As we have reported before, the new series is set approximately 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. Jean-Luc Picard is a haunted man who is no longer in Starfleet. The destruction of Romulus (depicted in the 2009 Star Trek film from Abrams) has deeply impacted Picard and he has attempted to make a life for himself on the old family vineyards.
The surprising elements from the trailer include Star Trek> alumni Brent Spiner and Jeri Ryan who are reprising their roles as Data (or perhaps B-4?) and Seven of Nine, respectively (the actors even made an appearance during the CBS panel at San Diego Comic Con). We even see a Borg cube in the trailer!
Seven of Nine seems to be much more animated than the reserved nature she showed during her time on Star Trek: Voyager. That is perfectly understandable as she would have been living on Earth for years by this time. Also – is it just me or is data’s body in remarkably large chunks considering he was inside the Scimitar when it exploded?
It is probably safe to say that Data and Seven have significant roles in the story. “What we don’t want to do is just throw in cameos,” said Alex Kurtzman when conversing with Entertainment Weekly. “There would have to be an incredibly specific story reason [to include them]”.
While not specifically shown in the new Star Trek: Picard SDCC trailer, CBS confirmed that Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis will reprise their roles as William Riker and Deanna Troi. Jeri Ryan will not be the only Borg on the new show. Jonathan Del Arco will make an appearance as Hugh at some point.
Star Trek: Picard will premiere in early 2020. Those of you in the United States can watch it on CBS All Access – the network’s subscription-based streaming service. Amazon Prime Video will distribute the series worldwide.
