September 2018 NPD: Marvel’s Spider-Man Swings High

The September 2018 NPD results are in, with some very interesting results. According to VentureBeat, Insomniac Games’s PlayStation 4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man broke numerous records, achieving the highest launch for any PlayStation exclusive ever. It was the highest-grossing game of the month and it’s now the third-highest grossing game of the year, just behind Far Cry 5 and God of War.

For hardware, the PlayStation 4 was the bestselling console of the month, in both units and dollars. Xbox One sales are up 30% compared to last year and are up over 60% year to date. The Xbox One X 1TB Black is bestselling Xbox One hardware of the year, in both units and dollars sold.

Here’s the hardware numbers for September 2018: 

• Total: $1.376 billion (up 7 percent from $1.285 billion in September 2017
• Hardware: $306 million (down 3 percent from $316 million)
• PC and console software: $747 million (flat from 2017’s $744 million
• Accessories: $323 million (up 43 percent from $225 million)

The hardware numbers compared to 2017:

• Total: $8.912 billion (up 16 percent from $7.706 billion in 2017 year to date)
• Hardware: $2.422 billion (up 18 percent from $2.056 billion)
• PC and console software: $3.877 billion (up 5 percent from $3.708 billion)
• Accessories: $2.613 billion (up 35 percent from $1.942 billion)

Here’s a few other software highlights for the month, via NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. Forza Horizon 4 gained the highest launch month dollar sales in the series history (including Forza Motorsport titles) and is the biggest launch for a racing game on any Xbox platform, as well as being the seventh-highest game of the month. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was the fifth-highest selling game of the month, only behind the 2013 Tomb Raider in launch dollar sales.
