Rise of the Tomb Raider – Estimated 301K Units Sold At Retail It’s First Week

It is estimated that the first week of sales for Rise of the Tomb Raider ranked in at around 301K units sold – world wide, yes world wide. What may have hurt it, was that it released the same day as Fallout 4 which is estimated to have sold 5.2 million units it’s first week.  Not including it’s digital sales, which is estimated to have sold over 2 million units. Among other multiple titles being released around the same time, such as Star Wars: Battlefront, Halo 5: Guardians, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. Last gens Tomb Raider game is to have been estimated to have sold 1 million copies across multiple platforms in 48 hours, which set a franchise record.

Despite the low sales, Microsoft and Square Enix are “very happy” with the game. Crystal Dynamics, Brian Horton took to the forums and said “Microsoft and Square are very happy with Rise and the dev team, thanks for the concerns. Crystal and Eidos Montreal made a game we are proud of and we appreciate the overwhelming number of positive reviews and fan feedback. We’re looking forward to the Game Awards next week where we are nominated for Best Action Adventure and Best Performance for Camilla. Wish us luck, hopefully it’s just the beginning of the recognition Tomb Raider and Lara Croft receives this year.”

For now, the game has it’s exclusivity with Microsoft on Xbox One and can not branch to other markets. It will be released on PC and PS4 sometime in 2016. Hopefully, once we get deeper into the holidays and consumer wallets can recover from the multiple titles released, sales may begin to pick up.
