Castlevania has been finally hit Netflix, and it’s been getting some really positive reviews. Having watched it myself, I can agree that it’s very good. A bit short, but very good nonetheless.
The story begins with a young woman walking right into Dracula’s castle to ask for the knowledge to help people. Having advanced scientific resources inside his castle, Dracula takes a liking to this young woman and shares what he knows with her, ultimately marrying her. Cut to about a year later, and this woman is being burned at the stake. The Church had found “devil machines” inside her home, and deemed her a witch. Of course it wasn’t witchcraft, but as we all know…people fear what they do not understand.
Dracula’s Anger
Dracula finds out about his wife’s death, and makes a rather dramatic appearance to the people gathered at the cathedral to witness his wife’s burning. He gives them an ultimatum: One year to remove themselves and all they have built from Wallachia before he lays waste to all life in the region. A year passes and Dracula kept his word. A giant castle emerges and from it comes hordes of demons and monsters.
I really don’t want to spoil too much of the story as the series is extremely short. It’s only 4 episodes that are about 23 minutes each; and nearly every second is crucial to the story in some way. The first episode does a fantastic job at setting up the rest of the plot. It also sets the overall tone and feel of the series which by the way, definitely looks and feels like Castlevania should. It’s epic, it’s bloody, it’s mature, and it’s amazing. The artwork and animation is fantastic and is a joy to watch and admire. The voice work is pretty spot on too. I can’t really find anything negative to say about it aside from it being so short.
As if to address the short runtime, a second season has already been announced. It’s likely that season two will pick up right where season one left off. Let’s hope so! Stay tuned for more news as it develops.
