Review: Your Name

Your Name is about high schoolers Mitsuha and Taki who are complete strangers living separate lives. However, one night, they suddenly switch places; Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust their lives around each other. Yet, somehow, it works. They build a connection and communicate by leaving notes, messages, and more importantly, an imprint.

Your Name was originally released in Japan in 2016, and was an immediate hit. Now that it has arrived in the west the hit movie based off of graphic novel does not disappoint one bit. The film is a beautiful masterpiece that captivates the viewers with a delightful taste between the two main characters.

The main plot of the movie isn’t the most original seeing as there have been plenty of series before it that have somewhat of the same premise. However, what separates it from other films is that the body swapping between the two along with the emotional bonds shared will pull on your heart strings leaving you wanting more and more.

The art and animation in the film is one of the best I’ve seen. Usually, in series, the art and animation have a tendency to drop due to budget restraints or if it’s a long running series. Thankfully, the film doesn’t suffer from these problems. The voice acting in the film was also superb. I watched the movie in the Japanese version with the English subtitles. The actors Ryunosuke Kamiki and Mone Kamishiraishi who played Taki and Mitsuha respectively, did an amazing job embodying both characters causing you to cheer them on for their happiness and well being.

However the film has some moments that may be unusual for those who may not be used to the Japanese humor, such as when Taki switches in Mitsuhas body and starts groping her breast at the beginning of the film or when Mitshuha switches in Takis body and grabs his private parts. Each instance may be quick and subtle, but it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of the film.

Your Name is absolutely joy to watch. If you like romance and comedy with a bit of Syfy that immerses you in fictional vibrant world then this movie is definitely for you. The characters are a full of life and the story will leave you on the edge of your seat.
