Nvidia has officially revealed their new graphics cards: the GeForce GTX 1080 & 1070. These will be utilizing the new Pascal architecture, which will make them able to greatly outperform the current Nvidia cards that utilize the Maxwell architecture. In fact, both the GTX 1080 and 1070 will be able to outperform the $1000 Titan X for a fraction of the price.
Specifications:
Nvidia claims that the GTX 1080 is twice as fast as the Titan X and 3 times as efficient in terms of power consumption. It’s also been said that the 1080 is even faster than the dual SLI GTX 980 setup. It will use faster micron DDR5X memory, while the 1070 will use standard DDR5. The use of DDR5X results in the 1080 having a 10Gbps memory pipe, which is very impressive.
While Nvidia didn’t say too much about the 1070, they did tell us plenty about the 1080. This is most likely due to the 1080 releasing this May while the 1070 will not release until June. The 1080 will 2560 Cuda Cores resulting in a 9 TFLOPS of performance, while the 1070 will only have about 6.5 TFLOPS. In comparison, the GTX 970 had 3.9 TFLOPS, The 980 had 5 TFLOPS, and the yet to be released PS Neo will have 4.19 TFLOPS of performance.
Both the GTX 1080 and 1070 will provide 8Gbs of VRAM. The 1080 will run at a clock speed of 1700 MHz and will only consume 180 watts of power. It will also have new asynchronous advances which will improve efficiency as well as gaming performance.
Price:
The price for the performance is really the selling point for these 2 new graphics cards. With the GeForce GTX 1080 you will get double the performance of the Titan X (a $1000 gpu) for just $600. The GeForce GTX 1070 will provide you with performance that lies somewhere in-between the Titan X and GTX 1080, for only $380.
With the release of Nvidias new cards the GTX 970, 980, 980ti and Titan X have been replaced. The GTX 1070 greatly outperforms the aforementioned cards, Â and costs a great deal less than them all, with the exception of the GTX 970 that costs about $300.
Release Date:
The GeForce GTX 1080 will release May 27th of this year. The GTX 1070 will be released a couple of weeks later on June 10th.
A GTX 1060 and 1080ti were not mentioned but I imagine we’ll get more information of those later this year. These new Nvidia cards seem to focus on improving VR performance. I also think it’s safe to assume that AMD’s new cards are on the horizon as well.  After this reveal, many PC gamers are excited to see what AMD will show with their next cards. Rumors have been going around about their new Polaris architecture, and AMD has stated that it will deliver a historic leap in performance per watt, but for now all we can do is wait. Nvidia has made their move, it’s your turn AMD!
