Nintendo Switch tops Wii as best selling console for Black Friday, Cyber Monday

After the rather dismal performance of the Wii U it is refreshing to see that the Nintendo Switch is enjoying a massive wave of popularity. In fact, it seems that North American players can’t wait to get their hands on the Switch as the little hybrid console just broke several sales records over the Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday shopping weekend according to a press release from the Big N.

Measured from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, the five-day period saw consumers spend about $250 million on Nintendo products. This is a fairly broad category as it includes the Switch, the 3DS, the NES and Super NES Classic Editions and of course, a bunch of eagerly anticipated games. Nintendo hardware sales over the entire weekend are up 45% from the same period in 2017. Switch hardware sales are up 115% year-on-year while over a million copies of first party were sold over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. That is a 78% increase over the same period last year. Adobe Analytics says that the Switch was one of the most ordered items online during Thanksgiving and the best selling video game item for the weekend.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Evee! have sold a combined total of 1.5 million copies since their launch on November 16th.

Super Mario Party has become the fastest selling Mario Party game in this history of the franchise and is now the fifth Nintendo title to clear one million sales in the United States.

The 3DS refuses to die – the little handheld has reached an install base of 22 million in the United States.

The lifetime sales for the Super Nintendo Classic Edition have cleared 2.5 million while the NES Classic Edition boasts lifetime sales of 2 million units.
