Mortal Kombat X is the highest selling game of 2015

The NPD group has released a list of the top ten highest selling games of the year so far. It is important to note that the NPD is not allowed to release sale figures, only the rankings. Digital sales are not included in these figures, though the addition of them probably wouldn’t change too much. Fighting game, Mortal Kombat X, has come out on top so far this year.

  1. Mortal Kombat X (Publisher: Warner Bros.)
  1. Grand Theft Auto V (Publisher: Take-Two Interactive Software)
  1. Battlefield Hardline (Publisher: Electronic Arts)
  1. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Publisher: Activision)
  1. Minecraft (Publisher: Microsoft)
  1. Batman: Arkham Knight (Publisher: Warner Bros.)
  1. Dying Light (Publisher: Warner Bros.)
  1. NBA 2K15 (Publisher: Take-Two Interactive Software)
  1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Publisher: CD Projekt Red)
  1. Super Smash Bros. (Publisher: Nintendo)

Warner Bros is having one hell of a year with three games in the top 10 so far. It is impressive that Batman: Arkham Knight is already on number six, as the game came out in June. It will be interesting to see where the critically acclaimed sequel lies on the list by the end of 2015.

The fighting game community should be happy that there’s not one but two fighting games in the top 10. The fighting game genre, which was previously a niche genre, being this popular nowadays is proof of the community’s efforts in making their favorite game genre become popular. The biggest fighting game event in history, Evo 2015, just happened with Mortal Kombat X and Super Smash Bros both having over 1,000 entrants.

It is noteworthy that Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V are still in the top 10 after having been out for several years. The fact that these games are still selling this well is incredibly impressive and a sign of their incredible replayability.

It will be interesting to see how many of these games remain on the list by the end of the year, especially considering the amount of heavy hitters by the end of the year. Games like Halo 5: GuardiansCall of Duty: Black Ops 3Fallout 4Star Wars: Battlefront and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain are almost guaranteed to make the list.
