Microsoft has purchased the publishing rights to to Wasteland 3, the upcoming RPG from tne recently acquired inXile Entertainment. While Microsoft had obtained ownership of the Wasteland IP late last year, the publishing rights for the next game in the series belonged to investors who funded the game on Fig – a crowdsourcing platform for video game investors.
Microsoft has paid approximately $2.3 million to secure the publishing rights to Wasteland 3. The money will be distrubuted to Fig investors who backed the game in a lump sum payment. Each investor will receive a payment of 132 percent of their investment as compensation. This payment is higher than what the investors would have received had the game been pubished indepently as originally planned.
“As you may already know, inXile joined the Microsoft family late last year – we are excited for them for this next stage in their journey of making unique and creative games and can’t wait to see what they do next,” an email sent to Fig investors explains. “As a part of this transition, Microsoft has also recently purchased Fig’s publishing rights for Wasteland 3, for a price of $2,295,000 which will provide a positive return to all investors in Fig Game Shares.”
Microsoft has also acquired the publishing rights to the highly anticipated Psychonauts 2 from another Fig investment campaign. Microsoft will publish both titles for all previously announced platforms including PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
