Kenneth Branagh reportedly being eyed for Thor 3

Recently, Heroic Hollywood’s Umberto Gonzalez hinted on Popcorn Time that Marvel may be looking to Kenneth Branagh to direct the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Kenneth Branagh has previously worked with Disney when he directed the first Thor movie as well as this year’s live-action Cinderella. After the critical and commercial success of Cinderella, it’s not entirely far fetched that Marvel Studios and Disney might like to see Branagh take the helm again.

What’s interesting is that during the directors press tour for the live-action Cinderella, he did speak a little about his relationship with Kevin Feige and his work with Marvel Studios. This discussion also touched on the possibility of helming future Thor standalone movies an extract of which is below:

“I have seen more of the movies, and as I’ve said before, I had a good time there. It was a really sort of pivotal moment to me doing ‘Thor,’ and I like them. I like Kevin [Feige] very much. You know, you never say never. I think I couldn’t begin to speak for the complications of their interweaving of this ever-expanding universe, which is totally fascinating to behold. But I think they’re masters of their own destiny. They know what they want, and we all got on terribly well. So I’m sure if they felt there was a spot for me somewhere in there they’d give me a shout. And of course I’d listen, but it’s not something I’m actively seeking or looking for, although I am actively enjoying and seeking out the movies every time they come out. So I’m definitely a fan of the world.”

It is widely speculated that Branagh did not return to direct Thor: The Dark World due to creative differences with the Marvel Executives and as the universe expands it can be more and more difficult for directors to retain creative control over their projects. The Russo brothers may have been a good fit for Captain America: The Winter Solider, but Ant-Man’s Edgar Wright and The Avenger’s Joss Whedon have both spoken of friction and over the potential difficulties of working within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
