Ki-ki-ki ma-ma-ma. Jason Voorhees has been terrorizing teenage campers and audiences for over 30 years and it looks like he’s trying to terrorize gamers. After being a playable character in Mortal Kombat X earlier this year, Jason’s ready to star in his own game by Gun Media.
The game will be a 1 vs 7 multiplayer game where 7 players will take on the role of camp councilors who have to survive a night while being attacked by a player controlling Jason.
The game was originally going to be a new IP called Slasher Volume 1: Summer Camp, which would had been an homage to the Friday the 13th franchise. Luckily for Gun Media, Sean Cunningham, the director of the original movie and owner of the license, heard about their game and decided to make it a full-on Friday game.
Cuuningham is working closely with the studio along with the movie’s original composer and the actor who portrayed Jason to make sure the game is an authentic experience.
So far we have two looks at the game, a cinematic trailer and an in-depth video by the developers on the Kickstarter page. The latter gives a really good sense of what the developers want to accomplish and shows that they really do have a love for the franchise.
The Kickstarter will have obtained its goal when it reaches $700,000 and it has various stretch goals. The Kickstarter has many options to back the game including ones that will get you a replica machete and your name on one of the game’s tombstones. However, if you just want the game you can back it right now for $30 or if you’re quick enough you can become an early bird backer and get it for $25.
While at first it may seem fishy that a game based on such a huge property needs a Kickstarter, Gun Media explains that they don’t want to work with a big publisher on this game because they want to have full control over the final product. They ensure that they’ll make this the best game possible and an authentic experience for fans of the series.
Friday the 13th: The Video Game is currently set to come out in the fall of 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
