There was a time when independently produced video games were relegated to the realms of freeware or extremely low priced bargain titles. Now indie video games are big business. Microsoft has announced via Twitter that games published through the ID@Xbox program have generated over $500 million in sales since it launched in 2014.

ID@Xbox is a program for independent developers to self-publish games on Xbox One and Windows. Developers who ship games through ID@Xbox do not have to pay fees to update their games and gain access to technical documentation and resources such as the Unity game engine or Unreal Engine 4.
