A few weeks ago if you were to ask random games what the most popular online games on Xbox Live were you probably would have heard them respond with Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto Online. One of Microsoft’s internal studios – The Coalition – has changed all of that with the recent release of Gears of War 5. It has been five days since the Ultimate Edition of the game was released and the game has soared to the top of the “Most Played” games list on Xbox Live for the United States and Mexico. The free-to-play multiplayer shooter Fortnite has ruled the Most Played charts on Xbox Live for well over a year now. For Gears of War 5 to top the list in only five days is a most impressive feat.
Keep in mind that this is only the Ultimate Edition of the game which carried an MSRP of $79.99 and was also available to Game Pass subscribers. The Standard Edition was released yesterday and is currently #12 on the same list.
Gears of War 5 is enjoying overwhelmingly positive reviews though the online modes of the game have suffered from frequent crashes. The Coalition has responded with a promise of some in-game goodies to compensate players impacted by the outages. Here is the announcement made via Twitter:
