Thor: Ragnarok easily took first place during its second weekend in theaters. Daddy’s Home 2 and Murder on the Orient Express opened up in the top three. Marvel has continued to prove that their franchises get better with each movie made.
Thor: Ragnarok took in a hefty $56 million this weekend. This brings the worldwide total to an insane $650 million. In a little over three weeks the third Thor movie has made more money then the first two movies in their entire theatrical run. Marvel is just nothing short of a Golden Goose for their parent company, Disney. Just about every movie they make in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done extremely well for them. The thing is though this movie doesn’t have enough steam to beat out Justice League next week.
Now the other two movies that were released this past weekend did very well when you compare them to the Marvel juggernaut. The Will Ferrell/ Mark Walhberg comedy opened with a strong $30 million. Johnny Depp hasn’t had the best of luck recently with his movies. Murder on the Orient Express opened with a decent $28 million. Maybe the time of the huge movie stars are fading, George Clooney and Matt Damon couldn’t muster the viewers this year.
Weekend Top Five
5. Jigsaw $3 million
4. Bad Moms Christmas $11 million
3. Murder on the Orient Express $28 million
2. Daddy’s Home 2 $30 million
1. Thor: Ragnarok $56 million
Next weekend Justice League is coming. The second team up DC movie is looking really good right now. The reviews haven’t been as bad as Suicide Squad. I don’t see the movie doing Avengers numbers, but people could really like it. The Star and Wonder both release next weekend as well. With such a crowded market Thor: Ragnarok should easily capture second place.
