Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel Fails to Bring in the Viewers

This past weekend was a dismal holiday for the movies. Alita: Battle Angel and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part both failed to gross more than $30 million this weekend. Theaters had the same problem last weekend, when the second LEGO movie was released. Why go to the theater in awful weather (or in great weather) when you can just wait for the movie to show up on Netflix or another streaming service?

The three movies that were released were Happy Death Day 2U, Alita: Battle Angel, and Isn’t it Romantic. Out of these three movies, only two did well this past weekend. Given the size and amount of money spent on budgets, Happy Death Day 2U fared the best, with Isn’t it Romantic right behind. Happy Death Day 2U grossed an $9.5 million bringing the full world-wide total to $26.5 million. With a budget of $9 million that’s nothing but good news for Blumhouse Productions. Alita: Battle Angel can still turn things around as it sits at $137 million world-wide, against a budget of around $170 million. This movie still has the Japanese and Chinese markets to open in, and those markets help Warcraft and recently Venom make money back.

Weekend Top Three

3. Isn’t It Romantic $14.3 million

2. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part $21 million

1. Alita: Battle Angel $28.2 million

Next weekend, two movies will open up in a large number of theaters. How to Train Your Dragon 3 and Fighting with My Family will both be looking to take the top spot. Both movies look great and are sitting really well on RottonTomatoes.com.
