Just when we were beginning to think that sequels are having a tough time at the movie theaters lately when along comes Spider-Man: Far From Home with a record breaking opening. I don’t think it is any big surprise that the latest Spidey flick was going to do gangbusters at the box office but you know that the big wigs over at Disney are smiling. That is because Toy Story 4 is holding strong at second place. With Aladdin at 5th place and Avengers: Endgame still raking it in with a 9th place showing the House of Mouse is enjoying a nice payday.
Spider-Man: Far From Home was played on a whopping 4,634 screens and is estimated to have brought in over $93 million during the weekend. However, the movie opened on Tuesday of last week and the six-day total is nearly $186 million against a production budget of $160 million. This smashes the record for a six-day release to open on a Tuesday. This is also the highest grossing Tuesday opening in cinematic history. The latest Spider-Man movie is estimated to have brought in over $580 million worldwide.
Toy Story 4 earned another $34 million during its third weekend in theaters and is sitting on top of over $650 million globally.
Annabelle Comes Home didn’t quite reach $10 million domestically over the weekend. The global total so far looks to be about $135 million. The killer doll is only in her second week at the box office so she should be able to bring in over $200 million worldwide. What about the other maniacal toy with a taste for murder? Chucky couldn’t even bring $1.5 million domestically this weekend and currently ranks in 12th place on the charts.
Aladdin is in its 7th week in theaters and managed to scrape up another $7.6 million. Worldwide totals are just over $920 million. Will the latest Will SMith movie bring in over a billion at the box office? Probably not but with a production budget of $183 million the movie has been quite lucrative for Disney.
Next week we see a number of smaller movies that will debut in theaters worldwide. Horror fans may want to check out Crawl. It’s about a woman who is trapped in a flooding house during a hurricane and has to contend with hungry crocodiles.
Let’s face it, most studios wanted to get their films out before July 19th when The Lion King remake hits screens all over the world. While we are on the subject, Amazon Prime subscribers can buy the original version of The Lion King in HD for just $8.99 from Amazon Instant Video.
