Remember the good ol’ days when people with dreams of getting rich in Hollywood aspired to earn their fortunes by being in front of the camera? As the world becomes more obsessed with entertainment content the demand for writers, directors and producers continues to grow. It turns out that the money you can make behind the camera is nothing to sneeze at. Proof of this can be seen over at WarnerMedia who is said to be very close to signing a $500 million deal with Bad Robot – the production company owned by J.J. Abrams.
Half a billion dollars. To put that insane number into context, Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story) has a $300 million deal with Netflix while Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy)is enjoying a $100 million contract – also with Netflix. Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Riverdale) has one of the more lucrative partnerships totaling $400 million because he’s signed with Warner Bros. TV. J.J Abrams is poised to crush that with his pending contract.
Abrams is currently signed with Paramount but that contract is set to expire next year. The news that Bad Robot will soon be parting ways with Paramount is said to have sparked a bidding war among some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Sony, HBO and Disney (who is currently working on Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalkers with Bad Robot.) Those familiar with the matter say that the negotiations between WarnerMedia and Bad Robot are in the final stages and the contract will ultimately be valued at somewhere around $500 million USD.
WarnerMedia is preparing their own subscription service which will include an assortment of movies and television shows. With such a service looming close it is imperative for Warner Bros. to retain top tier talent to ensure a steady stream of content for subscribers.
Bad Robot has declined to comment on the matter for the time being.
