Tomb Raider Can’t Stop Black Panther

Black Panther was able to stay on top for the fifth week in a row since its box office debut. Tomb Raider just didn’t have what it takes to become the top movie with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 49%. It seems that this movie is not the one that will break the curse of films adapted from video games. Surprisingly, I Can Only Imagine grossed $17 million this weekend.

Black Panther has passed the $600 million mark domestically. The movie is right behind The Avengers which is at $623 million; Black Panther should pass that in the next two weeks. A Wrinkle in Time dropped down to fourth place with a dismal $16.5 million. The movie should continue to drop down the list of movies next weekend with Pacific Rim: Uprising coming out. Tomb Raider was the movie that should have stopped Black Panther. It opened with $23.5 million domestically and that brings the world-wide total to $126 million. Tomb Raider has actually made back its budget of $94 million.

Weekend Top Five

5. Love, Simon $11.5 million

4. A Wrinkle in Time $16.5 million

3. I Can Only Imagine $17 million

2. Tomb Raider $23.5 million

1. Black Panther $27 million

We should see the toppling of Black Panther next weekend from its perch as the top movie at the box office. Pacific Rim: Uprising is leading the charge with Midnight Sun, Sherlock Gnomes, and Unsane as the moves that will be coming out in multiple theaters. This past week Marvel fans where given the chance to finally see Thanos in action as a new trailer arrived. Avengers: Infinity War has broken the Fandago record for fastest selling super hero movie in pre-sales. It only took six hours for the movie to break this record. Expect this movie to be on top for a long time.
