Nearly thirty years ago a pair of funky aliens came very close to becoming the new mascots of Sega. While that role would eventually be given to a certain blue hedgehog, those aliens – ToeJam and Earl – did appear in two of their own games for the Sega Genesis and would even resurface years later on the original Xbox. Now the laidback duo is all set to return in an entirely new adventure for modern consoles and computers in early 2019. While we are going to have to wait a bit longer to get our hands (or tentacles, as the case may be) on ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, we did just get a new gameplay trailer showing off the PlayStation 4 version of the game. You can watch it below:
I admit that it has been quite a few years since I played these games but it looks like the new game will play very much like the original ToeJam & Earl with the familiar isometric viewpoint albeit with a more organic (and handdrawn!) art style.
The game is funded by a Kickstarter campaign launched in 2015. In case you are wondering whether ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove will retain the humor and style of the original game, rest assured. It is spearheaded by Greg Johnson, the man who created the series in the first place. HumaNature Studios – founded by Johnson – is handling the development.
The game is scheduled to be released on March 1st, 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. You will also be able to find it on Windows 10, MacOS and Linux computers. A physical copy of the game for PS4 and Switch will be provided by Limited Run Games.
