TiCGN Box Office Recap: War for the Planet of the Apes Sneaks Past Marvel

Caesar has come and claimed the box office from Spider-Man:Homecoming this weekend. It should be short lived given the fact that War for the Planet of the Apes only made $56.5 million this weekend. I understand that $56.5 million is a huge amount of money but given the fact that most movies drop off after the second week, this might be the only time this movie makes big financial gains domestically.

War for the Planet of the Apes just barely made it past Spider-Man: Homecoming which dropped from it’s large opening weekend to a decent $45.2 million. War is the third movie in the franchise that pits Caesar and his kind in a war against the humans lead by the Colonel played by Woody Harrelson. The reviews for this movie are the strongest yet for any in this franchise. With the latest Apes movie releasing in the middle of Summer, this movie will have to go through several trials to hold the top spot.

Weekend Top Five

5. The Big Sick $7.6 million

4. Baby Driver $8.7 million

3. Despicable Me 3 $18.9 million

2. Spider-Man: Homecoming $45.2 million

1. War for the Planet of the Apes $56.5 million

Number five on the list has had some momentum lately. The Big Sick opened in limited release and it has slowly been adding theaters to this box office run. The foreign take for this movie has yet to hit $100,000 while the domestic run is sitting at $16 million. Next weekend Dunkirk, Girls Trip, and Valerian will be released. With Dunkirk being attached to Christopher Nolan’s name, it will more than likely take the top spot.

Some of the most recent trailers include a behind the scenes look at Star Wars: Episode 8, A Wrinkle in Time, Bushwick, and Darkest Hour. I can’t wait to see what will happen next weekend with such a crowded box office.
