Many people have issues with their favorite shows being remade into something entirely different. My contribution to the Witching Hour will focus on the new version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I was excited to hear that a new version of everyone’s favorite show was given a new darker twist. This version actually is more geared towards those who appreciate the horror genre as it is titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
From the start of the first episode, viewers will notice the tone set for most of the first part of the season. Sabrina is thrust between the mortal world and witch world as she turns 16. At this age she must give up the mortal world and dive straight into the Dark Lord’s grasp as she is supposed to have a dark baptism. She actually decides to not go through with this task. For the rest of this first part the show seems a little more upbeat and childish. You need threads of what is coming up in the second part; just be prepared for that darker turn to happen sooner than you think.
The best part in every episode is the show’s intro. The animated horror fest with the occult Sabrina is amazing. Being a fan of horror, it’s nice to see all of this work being put into a property that once was a cheesy comedy that everyone watched with their families. Sometimes it’s better to have that dark side of life within reach whenever you need it. The Sabrina Spellmans aunts played by Lucy Davis (Hilda Spellman) and Miranda Otto (Zelda Spellman) bring that dark flavor that keeps the show grounded in the darkness. The fighting between the two sisters also adds some extra laughs as Zelda is constantly killing and reviving her sister Hilda every time Zelda gets frustrated with her.
This version really will cause many people to feel very offended as it has a different view on religion. Just remember, this is a show on Netflix that was supposed to be a spin-off of Riverdale. That show on the CW based on the Archie comics; it’s just a little darker. I could continue to pick apart the characters or lack of talking coming from Salem the cat. Since this is The Witching Hour, you should just jump into the first part of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I’ll talk about the second part later in the month.
