Lionsgate has released the very first Hellboy trailer and it shows the updated look for the titular demonic hero played by David Harbour. You can watch the trailer for yourself below but be warned that it warrants an NSFW tag due to language and an instance of gore.
I have watched the trailer twice and find myself a bit torn over the direction of Neil Marshall’s reboot of the Hellboy franchise. The new Hellboy trailer portrays the film as rather comedic and that doesn’t sit too well with me. I understand that humor has long been a part of the Hellboy franchise but my impressions from the trailer leave me worried that this new film went too far with the comedy.
I think what bugs me the most is David Harbour’s appearance as Hellboy. It just looks so – for lack of a better word – artificial. His massive right hand and forearm look fine enough but the rest of him looks only a bit better than a talented cosplay creation. Maybe I am just too attached to Ron Perlman as Hellboy but I swear that the 2004 iteration of the character looks much better.
The other characters shown in the trailer present a mixed bag. Ian McShane does not offer a convincing performance as Trevor Bruttenholm though Sasha Lane seems well suited to play Hellboy’s ally Alice Monaghan.
It is completely unfair to judge a movie by its trailer and so I will give the film a fair chance when I review it. What do you think of the new Hellboy trailer?
