Some of our older readers may remember an adorable little puzzle game released over twenty-five years ago called Lemmings. Players were tasked with guiding the obnoxiously cute little lemmings from one point of a level to another. That sounds common enough for a game, right? Not quite. If you do nothing the lemmings will simply walk around and if there is a stage hazard in their path they will happily march towards their demise. You give the lemmings jobs like digging or climbing in order to help their brethren make it to the end of a level safely. It was a hugely popular game back in the day. It was originally available for the Amiga but would eventually wind up on the SNES, 3D0, CD-i and virtually every mainstream video game platform in the early 90’s. Now thanks to Sony the game has returned to mobile platforms. In fact, it is available now for iOS and Android devices.
Some of you may be scratching your heads now. Wasn’t Lemmings around before the PlayStation was released? What does Sony have to do with the game being available on mobile? The original game was published by a company called Psygnosis which was acquired by Sony as one of the earliest first party developers for the PlayStation. The studio changed its name to Sony Liverpool and was ultimately shuttered back in 2012. Sony retains ownership of the IP so yes, Lemmings is technically a PlayStation franchise.
The current version of the mobile game is free to play with optional micro-transactions. It plays very well on a touchscreen and the level design was created to take advantage of your device in portrait mode.
