Sonic the Hedgehog speeds past Birds of Prey at the box office

This weekend Sonic the Hedgehog decimated the competition at the box office. The video game movie grossed an estimated $57 million. Sonic is now sitting at $111 million worldwide. Not to bad for a movie that went through a complete character redesign. Even with the name change Birds of Prey was only able to gross $17 million in its second weekend. It seems the movie won’t be one of those big blockbuster comic book movies.

The reimaging of the show Fantasy Island grossed an estimated $12.4 million. This movie was dismantled by the critics. It’s not a bad idea to take a corny television show and turn it into a horror movie, definitely better than rebooting The Grudge over and over again. The Photograph came in at number four with $12.2 million. The final movie that was released this weekend is the Will Ferrell movie Downhill, it crashed with a dismal $4.6 million at the box office.

Weekend Top Three

3. Fantasy Island $12.4 million

2. Birds of Prey $17 million

1. Sonic the Hedgehog $57 million

Since this is an extended weekend with the Presidents Day holiday the numbers will change a little. To stay consistent we won’t be worrying about those numbers. Sonic the Hedgehog should finish this weekend well over $60 million. Next weekend look for The Call of the Wild and Brahms: The Boy II to be released. These two movies will give Birds of Prey a run for its money as Sonic the Hedgehog will stay at the top of the box office for a second weekend. I feel like I will be right about next weekend, so far this year I’ve picked the wrong movies to do well. It’s time my luck will change.
