Only mere days after the unbelievable news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from the Han Solo movie, it’s been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that Disney and LucasFilm have hired Ron Howard to direct the remainder of the movie. After what can only be called an unprecedented move, the movie desperately needed another director to shore things up, and clearly Disney think Howard is the man to do it.
Howard hasn’t had the best run as of late, but is generally seen as a great director. Although his last two films were disappointments both commercially and critically (Inferno and In the Heart of the Sea), he is still the Oscar-winning director of 2002’s A Beautiful Mind. THR claims that Howard is seen as a safe choice. After all, this is not the same situation as Joss Whedon directing a few reshoots on Justice League. This is reportedly one quarter of the film that still needs filming plus reshoots.
It’s been reported that Howard will be meeting the cast soon to ensure everything remains calm. They also say that shooting on the film will resume in just under a month on July 10th.
Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say about the appointment in a statement:
“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began 40 years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew and the absolute commitment to make a great movie.”
The Untitled Han Solo movie will be released on May 25th, 2018.
