The English language can be a pain to use. That being said in this awesome game called Spellspire, it can be used to defeat hordes of monsters. I had the chance to play Spellspire on the PS4.
Story
This game’s story is not something you can actually use as review criteria. You just play as a wizard trying to clear a tower full of monsters by selling words. I won’t be adding this in my final score.
Audio
Spellspire features some enjoyable music. Compared to some of the other games that 10 Ton has made, this is one of the best in the audio department. The game doesn’t feature or need any dialog. Most of the audio you hear are the sounds of those monsters dying as you spell your way to the top of the tower. I found the music to be enjoyable when you compare it to games like Tennis in the Face.
Graphics
Spellspire has a great look and feel to it. Seeing the small details in the items you could buy, to the monsters that you have to defeat, is one of my favorite parts of this game. The simplistic cartoon style works so well on this game that you forget you’re supposed to be paying attention to the timer on each monster. The developer usually has vibrant and wonderful looking games. Spellspire falls easily into those categories.
Gameplay
Spellspire is a simple game to learn and a difficult game to master. Players take the role of the Wizard who’s on a quest to rid the tower of monsters. Players need to spell any word they find in the jumble of letters on the bottom right of the screen. Doing this causes damage to the nearest monster or entire group of monsters. A player can get stuck trying to find that one word longer then six letters. I enjoyed being able to easily destroy the monsters with any word I could find.
The Wizard’s wardrobe (including a hat and wand) all have certain attributes. Players can mix and match these different items as they see fit. The depth of the unlocks in this game is substantial for the price. One thing that just became a little overbearing however was the grinding for gold. After a certain amount of time you get to the point that you need to grind for a while before you can afford an upgrade or new outfit. This is the part of the game that will cause some players to leave.
Verdict
Spellspire is a fun game that really only has a few issues. The price is low for the amount of content. It’s also nice to see some support for the Vita since this game is a Cross-buy with the PS4. The lack of multiplayer and easier ways to get gold will make this somewhat inaccessible to the larger audience though in my estimation. I did however have a great time with this game on both systems.
