The Switch has a selection of inexpensive games that really shine on the system. I, Zombie is a small game that packs a punch for the Nintendo Switch. Usually when we review a game the story is a part of the score. Since I, Zombie doesn’t have a story that really affects the game, I won’t be using it.
Audio
The music in I, Zombie is simple yet enjoyable. Usually I need to have a great soundtrack to get into the game that I’m playing. It can either be the original music or something from my Spotify account. I played with the sound on, although not for the music. The sound effects are the best part of the audio. It’s extremely helpful to have the sound on when the soldiers are firing at you. I had moments where I wasn’t paying attention to the path they where walking. The sound of the gunfire spooked me into moving my zombies away. I, Zombie has a few songs that make me think of the game Stubbs the Zombie. That game didn’t always take it self seriously and neither does this game, which is a great thing. The music is really something that you can just ignore though, and that hurts the game for me.
Graphics
I, Zombie isn’t going to blow you away with looks. After playing it on the the Switch and Xbox One, I was happy to see how well the game looked on the handheld. The game really ported over to this hybrid console nicely. If you notice the two screen shots, those were taken from the Xbox One version. For some insane reason the Switch version will not allow you to take screenshots. With bright colors you don’t really feel like you’re playing a blood thirsty zombie. The green color that covers the zombie is perfect. You get that rotten flesh feeling just looking at him.
One of the best features in this game is the two different seasons that you play in. Having Summer and Winter are great, even though I felt like we should of had some more looks and levels by now. The game has been out for some time now. In the Winter set, you can hide behind a Snowman and easily take out your enemy. This feature is wasted in the game. It does look great though. The game is very tight and wonderful to look at.
Gameplay
This game is super easy to understand and play. The difficulty comes when you’re trying to get all the stars that are available to collect in each level. I, Zombie has you playing as a zombie that is really just alone in the world. He needs to add more zombies to his ever growing army. Like I said at the start of this, the difficulty is getting all those stars, by keeping your zombies from being destroyed. This can become a very frustrating experience. Outside of being able to control your character, the zombie leader can control those that he makes as well. The controls are follow, attack, and stop. This can make for some interesting challenges as you try to get the fastest time out of your friends or family. The game gets even better with the new level creator.
This new level creator is a great addition to a game that can be played through in a short amount of time. The interface for finding new maps may feel a little archaic when you compare it to other games on the Switch. This new addition brings some new life into the gameplay. Downloading and playing a map is fast and enjoyable, allowing the ability to vote on the map is a nice touch.
Verdict
I, Zombie has made its way to the Switch with something new. The level editor added a lot to the experience. Being out on the other consoles for such a long time, the developer had to come up with something great to add to this game. Since the other consoles you have a reason to get the fastest time with achievements and trophies. That is one of those features that Nintendo really needs to add in my opinion. The only problems I had with game were the fact you can’t take screen shots and that I didn’t get more levels to play. A new area with some new characters would have been a nice touch. I, Zombie is an inexpensive game that will give you and your family plenty of fun. Go out and download this game, it would help show Awesome Games Studio that we need a second game.
