PlayStation Keeps Pushing Forward
This generation PlayStation has consistently enjoyed strong earnings in their fiscal years. PlayStation has hit a milestone of 75 million consoles sold, with 2.5 million being sold in Q4 2018 alone. As of December 31st 2017, PS4 has sold 73.6 million units with 2.5 million more at the end of March 31st 2018. Although the 2.5 million sold at the end of this previous Q4 is actually down slightly from Q3 which managed to sell 2.9 million. Total hardware sales are in decline though, going from roughly 20 million a year to 19 million. This doesn’t even take into account the success and driving force of God of War and Detroit: Become Human which we can assume have pushed sales even further during Q1 2018.
Online Services and Software
Sony’s Games & Network Services earned an insane Â¥445 billion in revenue during Q4 which is up by 16.5% from the previous year. The Operating income was down by 13% to Â¥19.6 billion. Game software sales are up from 50 million to 52 million in Q4, with 43% of them sold digitally which is a 37% increase from last year. For Year on Year numbers, game software sales reached 246.9 million which is an increase from last years 217.9 million with 32% being a digital purchase, an increase of 27%. PS+ Subscriptions had a major increase between Q4 of 2017 to Q4 of 2018, where Q4 2017 had 26.4 million subs to 34.2 million at the end of Q4 2018 which is an increase of 23%.
For the entire fiscal year Game & Network Services division ¥1.94 trillion, an increase of 18% from last year. Operating income gained ¥178 billion to a total increase of 31%. Sony looks to keep this momentum going for the next fiscal year where they expect to earn 1.9 Trillion in revenue and 190 billion in operating income, as well as a hardware decrease to only 16 billion Ps4 units sold.
