Way back in 1988 a young Phil Spencer joined Microsoft as an intern. Nearly thirty years later the man who would become the public face of Xbox has been promoted and has joined Microsoft’s senior leadership team. This group includes Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, CFO Amy Hood and notably, Spencer’s former boss, Terry Myerson. This means that the head of Microsoft’s gaming dividion now reports directly to Nadella.
Spencer took to Twitter to thank those who congratulated him on his promotion and that this demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to gaming.
Thanks to everyone for the very nice comments today, great show of commitment by MS to the Gaming opportunity, proud to be part of this team

What does this mean for the Xbox gamer? That remains to be seen but it is a positive side that the head of Microsoft’s gaming initiatives now sits on the senior leadership team. Spencer will directly work with the heads of other Microsoft divisions to implement gaming opportunities across the company’s products such as HoloLens and mixed reality headsets.
Nadella commented that Microsoft’s gaming business exceeded $9 billion last year and the division is growing profitably.
