After enduring a very rough month in July, MoviePass has announced that their service is going to become about 50% more expensive and much more restrictive than it was just a couple of months ago.
A recent press release from the company indicates that the price of MoviePass will be raised to $14.95 per month; the price increase should occur within the next thirty days. If you are the type of fan who goes to the cinema to see a movie several times then you are not going to be happy with a new restriction – there will be limited availability on first-run movies during the first two weeks of their theatrical run. An exception may be made if MoviePass reaches some sort of promotional deal with a studio for certain films.
The price increase and first-run film restriction are in addition to the recently implemented peak pricing program which can cost users as much as $10 per theater ticket – a charge that has reportedly been added even for movie showings with low attendance.
“While no one likes change, these are essential steps to continue providing the most attractive subscription service in the industry,” said company CEO Mitch Lowe.
If you are unhappy with the changes at MoviePass, one of its competitors is not so coincidentally having a sale on its movie theater subscription plans if you are willing to pay annually. Sinemia is offering its cheapest plan for $3.99 per month when you pay for a full year in advance. For that you get one ticket per month. They also have pricier plans available which give you more theater tickets every month. The only drawback is that getting your tickets is currently a bit of a convoluted process that requires you to go back and forth between the Sinemia and Fandango apps. Hopefully the process becomes more streamlined in the near future.
