What a busy week it has been for Batman’s greatest villain. Only mere days after the report by Deadline that the Joker will be receiving his own origin story, it has been announced by The Hollywood Reporter that the Clown Prince of Crime will be the focal point of yet another DC movie. This time it will be a Joker and Harley Quinn movie.
This should come as no surprise really, for these characters remain two of the most popular amongst fans of both the comics and movies. There have been rumours about whether Jared Leto would be coming back to reprise his role,but this announcement seems to have cleared things up. As this movie will be set in the regular DC Extended Universe (unlike the Joker origin movie), it appears both Jared Leto and fan-favourite Margot Robbie will be returning to wreak havoc as the criminal duo.
As for writing and directing, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are reportedly close to joining the team to both pen and helm the movie. Ficarra and Requa are most famous for 2011’s Crazy Stupid Love, as well as the popular TV show This is Us.
Both this movie and the Suicide Squad sequel are apparently being fast-tracked into development, presumably to strike when the iron is hot and the characters remain fresh and relevant in the popular zeitgeist as well as to contend with actors contracts.
It seems a smart move on paper for DC as these two characters will certainly bring the audience in waves. And in the very capable hands of Ficarra and Requa, Warner Bros have a good chance of this movie also being well-received by critics and fans alike.
