Job posting gives a glimpse of Sony’s plan to put PlayStation Now games “on any device”

Evidence continues to point to a future where the next major video game war will not be fought over console hardware but rather the ability to put a new gaming experience in the hands of almost any consumer regardless of what device they use. The solution for this strategy lies in the cloud which allows platform holders to stream video games from their servers to players using anything from a traditional console to a Smart TV or even a smart phone. In fact, both Google and Microsoft are preparing to launch their own their game streaming services next year. Naturally our eyes turn to Sony who had actually launched a game streaming service years ago but has been very quiet about as of late. It appears that Sony is indeed preparing to expand their game streaming service called PlayStation Now to a wide variety of devices. A recent job posting on Greenhouse says that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s cloud engineering team is working towards “putting console-quality games on any device.”

PlayStation Now in its current form is a subscription service which allows players to access a catalog of over 700 games across several PlayStation console libraries. It was recently updated to allow downloads of most PS4 games on the service. There was a time when PlayStation Now was accessible on select Smart televisions and even some Android devices but it currently only available on the PlayStation 4 and Windows PCs.

Sony’s stated goal of bring console-quality games to any device would presumably include mobile devices. This makes us wonder how Sony plans to tackle the issue of controlling our games. Android Pie offers controller mapping for the DualShock 4 but would a theoretical PlayStation Now app on smart phones allow us to use our existing game pads?
