Insomniac Games – the studio behind several beloved PlayStation exclusives such as Ratchet & Clank and Spider-Man – has just been purchased by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The studio will only produce games exclusively for PlayStation platforms.
While primarily known for developing PlayStation titles, Insomniac Games has developed experiences for other platforms. They were the creative muscle behind Sunset Overdrive on Xbox One way back in 2014. More recently the studio developed a number of VR games including the upcoming Oculus exclusive Stormland.
Insomniac Games was founded in 1994 and their first title was Disruptor which sold in very low numbers and nearly caused the company to shutter their doors. After the success of their next series, Spyro the Dragon, the studio began working on Ratchet & Clank for Sony.
“The decision to join forces with Sony extends far beyond familiarity. Our studio vision is to create experiences that have a positive and lasting impact on people’s lives. As we look ahead to our future, we know that joining the WWS family gives us the best opportunities to fully achieve that vision on a much larger scale. Further, we believe that Sony shares a similar vision to positively impact players’ lives, their employees’ lives and the games industry at large,” wrote studio head Ted Price.
