The Halo TV Series Is Finally Happening, Showtime Orders Ten Episodes

First announced back at the reveal of the Xbox One in 2013, the Halo TV series has lingered in a state of limbo and development hell ever since the Xbox Entertainment division was shut down amid restructuring at Microsoft. Today, that’s no longer the case, as 343 Industries has confirmed the Halo TV series is finally happening.

Showtime has ordered a season consisting of ten episodes. The series (working title Halo)will take place in the 26th century, showcasing the war between humanity and the Covenant. Kyle Killen (Awake) will serve as executive producer, writer and showrunner, while Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is on board as the director for multiple episodes, as well as executive producer. Amblin Television and Steven Spielberg have helped put the team together for this project.

Showtime CEO David Nevins stated that “Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded. In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

Kiki Wolfkill, Head of Transmedia at 343 Industries, said that “As we think about what it means to bring videogame franchises to movie or TV – the biggest challenge can often be finding the right balance between moments fans have already experienced and moments that have yet to be experienced through a different medium, perspective, or creative lens. We are excited to navigate these creative waters to bring you something that is both respectful of what you already know and love, but also new and surprising and enthralling.” She continued on to say that “It’s a journey that we’re excited to take with you, our fans, and this new creative team. We’re already in the pre-production phase and we plan to go into full production in 2019 so hang on… this is going to be an awesome ride!”

This is definitely exciting news for Halo fans and I can’t wait to learn more. With Halo: Infinite announced just a couple of weeks ago at the Xbox E3 2018 conference, it looks like the future is bright for Halo.
